The latest video by Roger Carp, senior editor at Classic Toy Trains magazine, focuses on one of the greatest and most celebrated toy trains ever produced in America. In anticipation of the release of Lionel Trains of the 1940s, the new special-interest publication from CTT, Professor Carp looks closely at the Lionel no. 700E O scale replica of a New York Central 4-6-4 Hudson steam locomotive and tender. The combination made history when it was released after two years of development in 1937. Different images of this magnificent model graced the front cover of Lionel’s consumer catalog every year the engine was offered, right until production had to be curtailed in 1942 due to the need for materials to be diverted to America’s war effort.
Lionel devoted a great deal of time and money to creating this landmark steamer, which was sold separately and used as the motive power of the finest O-72 freight and passenger outfits. The company worked closely with the New York Central to be sure the 1:48 scale model was accurate in every aspect, including its decoration. This video goes into great detail about what made the 700E so significant more than 80 years ago and why collectors continue to prize examples of it.
