The BNSF Northern Transcon is a major railroad artery that funnels traffic from the Pacific Northwest to Chicago and points east. Closely followed by U.S. Route 2, there’s a lot of traffic on this Great Railfan Road. Come along with Trains.com as we show you some of the highlights of the route and how it fits in the BNSF system. We’ll go from the spectacular scenery in Montana, to the Gassman-Coulee Bridge in North Dakota. We’ll show you Amtrak’s Empire Builder, which operates on the line, and also jump back to the 1990s when Burlington Northern green was the predominant power on this heavily trafficked mainline. The BNSF Northern Transcon is a great place to watch trains, and with the proximity of US 2 to the railroad for most of the route, you’ll find a Great Railfan Road.
