Big Boy switch engine: In 2022, the Union Pacific decided to slim down its heritage program by donating several pieces of surplus equipment to a new startup collection—the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America in Silvis, Illinois. Among the pieces to be donated was Union Pacific 2-10-2 No. 5511, used during the filming of Last of the Giants in the 1950s, and long stored at the Cheyenne, Wyoming, roundhouse. Of course, with any engine that hasn’t moved in over 40 years, lots of prep work must be undertaken before a long move across the country. Come with us as we go behind the scenes with the Union Pacific Steam Program as Big Boy 4-8-8-4 No. 4014 is fired up to move the 5511 around the Cheyenne yard in preparation for the equipment move move to Illinois in November 2022.
