While undoubtedly fascinating from an enthusiast’s standpoint, pause a moment to reflect on a typical passenger’s experience: here, some 40 years after streamlining’s introduction, both GM&O [diners and coaches] and our sacred orange and brown Illinois Central [rebuilt coaches complete with six-wheeled trucks on the City of New Orleans] were still running heavyweight equipment.

    All that forward-looking marketing, innovation, … makes you wonder.
