Operating the layout | In the previous Episode 25 (Car routing with JMRI OperationsPro), you saw the crew prepare the State Line Route N scale model railroad for an operating session. Now, host David Popp walks you through the prototypical actions as they transpire over the simple, yet engaging layout!

The State Line Route in N scale is a mid-sized stand-alone model railroad inspired by the legendary HO scale Milwaukee, Racine & Troy, a large-room layout built more than 20 years ago by Model Railroader staff and their friends. The series began on Trains.com in July 2021 and covers the construction process from initial overview and planning to building benchwork, scenery, and more. You can also read about these efforts, starting in the January 2022 issue of Model Railroader magazine.
Could you include the JMRI Switch lists from the operating session to follow along with the video?
Well, this is quite thorough on staging to Williams Bay and the list of trains moving to or passing through. But I would have welcomed much more detail on the actual pickup and setouts in the yard. Are all pickups made first, then setouts, or simultaneous moves in and out as you switch each industry? How does the engineer work both leading and trailing sidings? When dropping and picking up a block, does the local switcher handle all moves or does the road engine perform some of the work? Are block moves from the front or rear of the through train? Would also be beneficial to see how the switcher engineer plans his (her?) moves for best efficiency – what’s first, next and last. Ever plan two person crews, engineer plus conductor? Maybe a more detailed session within the next three months? Good start, guys, but hopefully more to come.
Finally, its been 3 months since the last episode
