The ScaleTrains Electro-Motive Division SD7 HO scale (1:87.1) diesel locomotive is highlighted in this latest product review video from Model Railroader magazine. Senior Editor Cody Grivno explores the manufacturer’s Rivet Counter line, focusing here on the highly detailed Great Northern No. 572.
Built in April 1953, the prototype 1,500hp locomotive originally sported the iconic Empire Builder scheme before transitioning through Big Sky Blue to Burlington Northern green. The model boasts impressive features, including see-through footboard pilots, wire grab irons, and positionable cab windows.
Equipped with an ESU LokSound V5 decoder, the unit features realistic lighting and sound, including walkway lights and a three-chime air horn. Direct-current models retail for $214.99, while sound-equipped versions are priced at $324.99.

Such a beautiful engine! Would hate to weather it to any degree, just keep it museum fresh.
I think the door closing sound effects are a bit much, though.
Here’s a challenge for Cody, et al. Spend some time following and photoing a real loco performing these types of switching moves. Dropping and picking up cars, movement in the yard and sidings both with and without cars, real coupling speeds and especially acceleration and braking. Then we would know better how a proto switcher operates and be able to simulate these moves in our own operations.
Since the act of switching has remained pretty constant over the decades, any era layout could benefit.
