Farewell to the Milwaukee, Racine & Troy | As hosted by Senior Editor Cody Grivno, this salute to Model Railroader magazine’s renowned MR&T (a.k.a “Myrt”) 28 x 54-foot model railroad (Mark II) in HO (1:87) scale, captured historic insights from several influential modelers with firsthand experience working on the treasured layout. Enjoy exclusive clips of the MR&T under construction; as it appeared in the final days of operation under Kalmbach Media ownership; and lastly, the very moment contractors felled the famous landmark on July 26, 2024.

As many fond memories continue to rise from the debris, please feel free to share your recollections in the Comments below and the Trains.com Forum. Even better, keep a watchful eye on the Trains.com Workshop Webcam as staffers make progress erecting the next iteration of a Milwaukee, Racine, & Troy-inspired layout!

  1. Farewell to The King of Layouts The MR&T. This layout was my favorite my favorite project was Bay Junction. Neil, Old Hediger, and Andy we will miss you but some of your models will live on.

Can’t wait until the industrial park opens the next chapter of MR&T is being written.

  2. Its sad to see the MR&T go, but the MR&T 2 will be interesting to watch unfold.
I think you need to sell a DVD of this video. I have the 45 years on the MR&T DVD, its great. This would make a great addition to the first DVD.
Thanks for posting this video. I wish you guys all the best in the new year and beyond.

  3. I wish I could have went up there to visit the MR&T, at least it will be remembered in videos, I know we can’t wait to see the new version of the Myrt rise.

I know the Myrt would have celebrated its 50th anniversary this year, you should do so gold locomotives and cars to celebrate the 50 years of the MR&T.

  4. Thank you for preparing this final MRT #2 video. This layout was one of my all time favorites and I’m sad to see it go, but I am looking forward to the new MRT #3 switching layout!

  5. Great retrospective. You guys did well by all your predecessors who brought the MR&T to life. I’m sure the next chapter(s) will retain the Commitment to Excellence established long ago and continued to this day.

  6. Thanks for the welcomed closure with this final video on the MR&T 2.0. I was lucky enough to see this layout in person in 2016. Certainly sad to see it come down, but it’s a nice reminder that the MR&T lives on in the N scale layout and the new project layout.
