Meet Cody Grivno in this installment of Q&A with the Editors. Here, Model Railroader Magazine Senior Editor Cody Grivno speaks with Digital Editor Steve Sweeney about his time at Kalmbach, interests in railroading, and – of course – his role at Model Railroader and within the hobby industry.

This video series is exclusively for Trains.com Unlimited Members to get to know the editors and staff of the titles they enjoy so well. In turn, we will interview all editors and staff of the “tracks titles” at Kalmbach Media, including Trains, Model Railroader, Classic Trains, Classic Toy Trains, Garden Railways, Trains.com, and Kalmbach Books!

Although each interview is different, and each person unique, we ask five standard questions of each interviewee:

•What is your favorite railroad present or past? And why?
•What is the best part about what you do?
•Tell us about something exciting you’ve been working on lately.
•What interests you most about railfanning, modeling, research, etc.?
•If you were working for the railroad … what railroad craft or position best describes you?

We hope that these personal videos allow you to gain more insight into how your favorite magazines and media about railroading and model railroading are formed in suburban Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

More importantly, YOU, the Unlimited members at Trains.com will be able to ask editors questions in future episodes. Be sure to check each issue of the Trains.com Member newsletter for when we post more details!

  1. Good old Cody Mr. Cody’s Office himself. If there is one person who is a walking encyclopedia of railroad knowlage it’s Cody he is my go to guy as I build my layout.

  2. When I started watching videos on MR, the first series I saw were the ones where Cody was talking about basics, how to lay track, create simple scenery with plaster cloth and then add ground cover and other bits to it. I believe the intro music and video showed the Virginian project, or at least a Virginian locomotive running around the layout. The experience that Cody has shows in his work, how he’s able to pass it on in a very simple manner that got me hooked and led me to start my own diorama which made it into the January issue of MR.
He mentioned the BN merger back in 1970; I was working for Pacific Telephone back then in the Burlingame, CA central office on the swing shift. A copy of the San Francisco Chronicle was in the break room and in the center of the 1st section was a full 2 page ad for BN. One side had text saying something to the effect that “Burlington Northern has one word for shippers” and on covering pretty much the opposite page was the word “YES” in Cascade Green. I was able to find a copy of the paper the next day and I still have that center spread! Thanks to Cody and all the other staff at Model Railroader who help us fellow modelers improve our skills and create cool stuff for our personal model railroad empires!

  3. Great Job Cody! You are my Favorite Model RR Guy, Love your Videos and Articles! I was a Northern Pacific Modeler, so we share that. keep up the good work, from Park Rapids, MN. My wife grew up in Fertile MN>
