OAKLAND, Calif. — At least two people on board were injured Monday night when a Bay Area Rapid Transit train hit a pickup truck that had crashed onto the rapid transit line’s right-of-way, KGO-TV reports.
The collision occurred about 11:30 p.m. after the truck crashed onto the tracks between the Fruitvale and Lake Merritt stations. The train’s operator was taken to a hospital and at least one passenger was reported to be injured; no further information on their condition was available. Video shows the front of the train caved in at the driver’s compartment, as well as the badly damaged truck next to a section of fencing that had been torn away along a parallel street. The BART system has no grade crossings.
The driver was examined at the scene and police conducted a field sobriety test, but results were not reported.
A total of 45 people were evacuated from the train. BART service through the area was halted overnight but was restored by 5 a.m.
