The Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad, located near the south entrance to Yosemite National Park, will operate both of its three-truck Shay locomotives, Nos. 10 and 15, both alumni of West Side Lumber Co., which was located about 50 miles away. “This is a close as anyone can get to seeing operable West Side Lumber Shays in their natural environment,” says General Manager Larry Jensen.
No. 15 was built in 1913, and No. 10, the largest narrow-gauge Shay that Lima built, was made in Ohio in 1928.
The event promises photo runbys of the two engines, both solo and doubleheaded.
Seventy-five tickets are available at $75 each plus a $1 service charge at the website only, http://ymsprr.com. Click “Buy Tickets Online,” and choose “SHAY DAY PHOTO SPECIAL.”
A photo contest after the excursion will take place to select two photos for the railroad’s 2019 brochure, and the winning photographer will receive two tickets for the Moonlight Special barbecue train during summer 2019.
