CHICAGO RIDGE, Ill. — Metra SouthWest Service trains are back in operation today (Thursday, Feb. 12) following a Wednesday freight derailment that shut down the 15-round-trip-a-day operation between Chicago Union Station and Orland Park/Manhattan, Ill.
In a social media post shortly after 5 a.m., the commuter operator said it had been informed its tracks would be reopened by 5:30 a.m. and that trains will operate with minor delays. As of 7 a.m., the second inbound train of the day, No. 802, was shown to be due at Union Station about 7:22 a.m., or approximately 10 minutes late.
All SouthWest Service trains were cancelled Wednesday after the derailment of a CSX intermodal train blocked a diamond crossing with Metra’s tracks near the Chicago Ridge station [see “Freight derailment halts …,” Trains.com, Feb. 11, 2026].
Oak Lawn police report that a street closure at Central Avenue and 108th Street because of the derailment reopened late Wednesday, while Chicago Ridge police announced all roads in the area have reopened.
