SAN DIEGO — North County Transit District’s fleet of five retired Morrison-Knudsen F40PHM-2C locomotives was shuttled from storage at Oceanside, Calif., earlier this month and delivered to Coast Rail Services at nearby Anaheim. The units’ fate has not yet been determined. Among the parties interested in acquiring one or more units are two Southern California museums. The units were the standard power of the agency’s Coaster commuter rail service for almost three decades.
NCTD manages the Coaster commuter rail service between Oceanside and San Diego — about 38 miles — and connects with Metrolink and Amtrak. The retired diesels were replaced by Siemens SC-44 Charger locomotives. The agency owns 62 miles of right-of-away and also operates Sprinter service on the 22-mile Escondido Branch.
