David wraps up summer camp by painting figures and other details to complete his logging camp scene. Then he takes his finished stock car for a run on the layout. And finally, did he put that tree back into the scene or not? You’ll have to watch to find out!

  1. I really liked the project. If I did not watch this series I would have made Many, Many, Many, mistakes. But, thanks to you and your helpers it was a great build. I would like to have seen a complete running of the trains. I was trying to figure out if I wanted to do the backdrop, overhead lights etc. I think you could have put in some blue overhead lights to simulate a dusk of night operation.

  2. David, the logs that are being loaded on to the log cars are a bigger diameter than the trees that are growing in the area?

  3. After watching the installation of the lumberjacks I wanted start to sing the Monte Python song ….I am a lumberjack… lol

  4. David I am overly impressed with the Olympia and your presentation. Fantastic job. I have a 5X10 mining layout now that I am converting to modules for shows. I was looking at the Angels branch of the Sierra Railway or similar to the Thunder mesa for my 10 X 13.5 layout room. the sierra was going to be three decks but am now looking at doing a logging railroad on 5 2X5.5 ft modules. the first mod will be my town/connection to other parts of the world. mod 2 will be the sawmill, mod 3 will be camp 1 and mod 4 will be your next mod and the last will be either mining or oil wells depending where you are taking it after the sand creek extension. I am doing one or two 2×4 modules to work with my modular group with Oil well and a loading station to get the oil out to a refinery. those modules might make it to my layout room. We will see. the pumps will be early wooden pumps and derricks and plan on all to be operational. automation is highly needed in our hobby. I could not find the LED lights you used at either Home depot or lowes. but I did find 48ft led lights that would go well on my railroad will probably need two 48ft strings. these lights are linkable up to 5 48ft links. I am hoping to make them dimmable so that I can install a Thunder and lightning system when the storm blots out the bright light or night time for that option. Also my modules will not be 1/2″ plywood but door skin with 2″ foam on it. I like lighter modules to make them easier to move, though I am planning on casters also. All these ideas are your fault, you stuffed my brain with so many ideas, it frightening. I have the parts to make a movable boom and derrick log loading crane using an 0-4-0 side rod loco for the power on the crane. It will be able to move loaded or empty log cars and am looking at the parts for the Surrey Parker log loader also. Thanks for showing me how to do so many tasks on the layouts. I don’t have any local railroaders to help other than one guy that has about the same level of modeling experience which will help but you are the greatest one. To me MR has not been beneficial to the hobby since the 60s early 70s. Prior to those dates MR supported the hobby and modelers in all scales. Now they only support HO and N with an ocational venture to other scales but not much. Used to love seeing the live steam hobbyies once or twice a year but don’t think they have supported anything but themselves since the mentioned dates. thanks for being there for us and bringing the respect back in focus for MR.

I like your promise to do a video about painting figures, but why just O and HO figures. We in N Scale have some unique problems with this and would appreciate your tips on how to add the detail we need.

  6. David I have thoroughly enjoyed the log blog series and it has inspired me change my focus from big time mainline railroading to short line/ logging since I have a limited amount of space to work with. Also I am considering going from HO to On30 based upon what you have accomplished with the Olympia series. I am also considering blogging my own endeavors. Thanks for the series, look forward to what’s next.

  7. I like the mounting pins for people. I found track nail make great pins. Make the hole in the figure, glue it in and cut off the head. Works great!

  8. I really enjoyed the entire Log Blog Summer Camp series. It provided a great deal of excellent modelling instruction. I am looking forward to Log Blog 3.

  9. It has been great fun watching your Log Blog Series and ending it with a camp theme this summer was genius. I am looking forward to your Sand Creek extension.

  10. I have been following this series from the beginning and have been very impressed with all of the great modeling techniques. You have exposed me to products I did not know about so now I can try my hand at some of these techniques.

  11. I have been following this since the beginning .Very well done i am a great fan of MRVP..
I am a modeler for over 35 years , and i have learned a great deal over the years , thanks to all of you for your inputs ..

  12. Excellent series and superb modeling! Thank you, David, for teaching all of us how to be better modelers.

  13. My logging camp is staying HO, but sure learned a lot of details I will need to add for realism. Great series. Have bookmarked so it will be easy to look back for additional details as I build.
Thanks and will be looking forward to all future series.

  14. I CERTAINLY ENJOYED THE WHOLE SERIES. YOU ARE ONE HECK OF A MODELER! EXCELLENT!!!
THANKS AND A TIP OF THE HAT TO YOU DAVE.

  15. Great fun at camp. Looking forward to next year. Just a note on figure size. The Foreman looks to be more related to the Saw Sharpener than to the other figures.

  16. Excellent craftsmanship David !!! I really enjoyed the series. What I would like to know is, is this logging camp going to be available as a kit to build.? I am rebuilding my layout and want to add a logging camp because here in New England, there were MANY logging railroads especially in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. I simply do not have the time to scratch build a logging camp such as yours’, I need a kit .
