Climax no. 6 is still on the layout, but its mechanism has always struggled a bit, particularly running down hill. The Heisler’s compact size and smooth running are better suited to the tight spaces on the layout, so no. 6 is in the display case along with no. 11 (Ingrid), which after all the effort to get a capacitor pack in the locomotive has now developed a gear-binding issue.
Speaking of the Heisler, as far as I can tell, the Bachmann model is based upon A.W. Stevens Lumber Co. no. 1, the first 14-ton Heisler built. It is a dead ringer for the photo on page 20 and drawings on page 94 of “The Heisler Locomotive” 1891-1941 by Benjamin F. G. Kline Jr. It was built in 1896. Unfortunately, Bachmann did not model the water tank on the back of the fuel bunker. I was able to cobble one together by cutting the supplied oil bunker in half, then sealing up the open end with styrene. I built a shelf for it on top of the bunker using more styrene sheet.
I covered a bit of the modifications on the Heisler in episode 10. Check out the video just before the 11-minute mark. I plan on doing a complete DCC sound installation video on the Heisler in the near future. I’ve got all the parts sitting in my office, including a second locomotive that I plan to letter for the Sand Creek Ry., I just haven’t gotten to it yet. Watch for that coming sometime later this summer.

Hi Kurt – I wouldn’t doubt it about the Climax. I bought one and it ran for 3 days. They replaced it with one that never ran at all. So forget it. Get your gears straight. They only ran at about 3 mph anyway. Real ones could go 20+. The Heisler I now have runs great, even though it has a strangely narrow fuel bin. Why would any mfg. make the fuel bin smaller than the width of the frame? Never seen that before.
Really enjoy your videos. I am modeling HO scale and need logs to place in 40 -50 foot gondolas. What is a good way to model these logs?
New game, drink whenever David says “well”…in any video. The layout is coming along great. I don’t have much interest in narrow gauge log railroading but this series of videos always grabs my attention.
The log loader is looking great David, I really like the Bachmann steam donkey. I’m in On30 and I have the same steam donkey (they are very nice models), I’ll be using it in my Black Diamond mine head house. I like the weathering you did on both the steam donkeys you have on the layout. This layout is really coming to life, looking forward to the next episode.
I am Norwegian, but have subscribed to MR since 1973. After a couple of N scale US (Great.Northern) 4×6 layouts I switched to Norwegian railroads and H0 scale. MR and MRV plus still give inspiration, also the Logblog, but it is often difficult to “translate” US brand names to similar products available here. For your growing number of European subscribers a description of alternatives to Testor’s Dull Coat is appreciated (Tamya, Vallejo or Humbrol), for instance on “Ask MRV plus.

Hey David I have a question. What happened to the climax locomotive you were using? I see you’re using the heisler in your more resent videos. I was going to build a similar logging line in HO scale and bought a climax but for some reason after about 6-8 months of use it won’t run. I think it’s one of the gears in it but don’t know for sure. Anyway love the layout and watch each episode.

The log loader you picked is really more in keeping with the over all feel. I, personally, would have suggested a McGiffert, but that devise may be too sophisticated.
Don’t think they would have kept the locomotive coupled to the cars while loading, at least for the first car. The reason being is to prevent any damage to the loco from swinging logs.
