Watching your video gave me a whole new appreciation for the manufactures of these models. Installing all of the details has to be done by hand and by skilled people. I’ll never complain again about the price when I purchase my next model. Thank you Cody for another great video.
The only thing my workshop is missing to do these great little projects is a Cody! LOL – great video as always. Thanks.
Search the web for schnibbles. Seems the word has more to do with quilt patterns.
Great video. Not my gauge, but fascinating with all the detail that are included on models.
Every “Cascade Green” paint job has to meet it’s maker someday. Have faith and courage Cody, there’s plenty more out there!
Thanks Cody, looking forward to the rest.
To Mark Deschane (or Cody or anyone) – When I would brush paint as a kid it would leave brush marks and bristles that came off the brush and such, so I started using rattle cans and never brushed again. Do you have a clinic or a blog or something that demonstrates your methods – brushes you use, paints you use, prep and finish, masking, and what all? Or do you know of a clinic for such? I’d love to try brush painting again but would like to have some guidance.
Great work Cody! I’ve used 91% alcohol and a microbrush to remove lettering but never stripped a whole shell. I’ve always enjoy your work and your office!
I didn’t realize how old this video is. I see a number of questions but no answers. Does Cody ever answer questions posted to him about his videos, other than the ones he selects in a subsequent episode? It seem like a large number of questions go unanswered, unless they are posted elsewhere?
Great video. I’m actually re paint a GP9 from ATSF colors to Burlington Northern. This will help me a lot with this project. Thank you
Excellent video. I just wonder how many of the fragile parts land up on the floor or in your breakfast. So, for us occasional reconstructors, please mention in these type videos that a ‘parts box’ of some kind should be used to store the couplers, wheels, rails in. As one comment above said, it take 25 yrs to do this kind of project!! So find/buy/make plastic or wooden trays/boxes. BBB have selections of contains ers that can be rephurposed. Thx Adrian
Mark Faust, I would say it works better. I just stripped an older baggage car, and all the paint came off in under an hour, with minimal scrubbing. Bear in mind that any prior weathering may hinder the effectiveness.
Thanks Cody for the great video. I am going to have to change a lot of engines for the Reading RR.
Great video. Does anybody know if 91% alcohol works as well stripping paint off the old blue box Athearn models as it did on the newer Athearn here?
5y
I loved the WSS GP9 paint removal video. Cody makes it look so easy…………..
Paint schnibbles??
Impressive! I think working on a loco may not be a good idea for a beginner like myself.
Good Job, is there reason why you did not go with a undecorated GP-9? Be looking forward for your next step.
Looks like the alcohol works as well as brake fluid. But, as you said, different plastics take different strippers. One really doesn’t know until the unit is plunged into the stripper. On that note; be careful on older Atlas engines that were made in Yugoslavia (way back when) as they used a different plastic (brake fluid tended to soften it). Think it was more fun with the older models as there were fewer details to take off before stripping the paint. Naturally, before painting, some after market details would be applied.
Cody, how would this process change (if at all) for a metal shell (old Mantua loco)?
Cody have you ever tried a product call "Purple Power" for striping. I have used it with mixed results. It works well on the older Kato engines that brake fluid will warp the shells
"SNIBBLES"
"Little pieces of scrap paper or fabric left over after cutting something out."

Interesting, VERY interesting!
Have you tried Break fluid , I know its bad to used on paint because it strips it if you don't wipe it off. I used it in old Atheann models and yea it worked but you had to wash it all off before painting too.
Great job Cody, are you and/or any of the other folks going to be in Springfield, MA at the Big-E Amherst model train show? I see that Kalmback has a booth this year!! Thanks, MRC
