Our State Line Route layout is almost ready for scenery, but first there’s track detailing and painting to be done! David shares his process for cleaning and preparing track before Cody shows how to paint track with his airbrushing technique.
State Line Route in N scale: Painting trackwork, Episode 11
How is God’s name do you navigate this site if you want to watch this series from beginning to end? Site is all jumbled up. What a mess
Apply a thin wipe of 3-in-1 oil to the rail tops before painting (I put some on a piece of paper towel) and the paint will come right off using the craft stick. No issues of paint sticking when doing this.
I assume that the key point about cleaning off the tops of rails after painting is to do it while the paint is still not completely dry. I like the idea of using a piece of wood to do this–preferable to using a Brite Boy or something like that (because of the abrasions that are created). I’ve seen other videos where they used a block of wood–same general idea. Thanks for a very informative video. I especially appreciated David’s demonstration of how to prepare for and install the switch stands. While I’m using SMAILs to control the turnouts, I’m installing switch stands in yards. (I’m using switch motors on the main lines.) I’m just about at the point where I must paint the track, so this was timely.
