In this product review video, Model Railroader Senior Editor Cody Grivno takes a deep dive into the WalthersProto HO scale (1:87.1) EMD NW2 diesel locomotive. Cody starts with the prototype history of the NW2, which was produced by the Electro-Motive Division from February 1939 through December 1949. The review sample is decorated as Union Pacific No. 1064, built in May 1947 and retired in December 1980. The model features numerous factory-installed details, including see-through footboard pilots, Proto-Max metal knuckle couplers, plus plastic handrails and stanchions. The cab boasts a detailed interior with two painted crew figures and etched-metal cab sunshades. The review sample, equipped with an ESU LokSound V5 sound decoder, showcases functions like the diesel engine start-up, headlight, bell, horn, and coupler crash.
The Wm. K. Walthers, Inc., EMD NW2 is available in various paint schemes, including Santa Fe and New York Central, as well as an undecorated model. DC models with a speaker retail for $219.98, and versions with the ESU LokSound decoder sell for $319.98.
