In this video, David Popp demonstrates the steps for adding static grass that will help make your scenery texture appear more authentic – even in small spaces like those found on Model Railroader magazine’s 3 x 7-foot N scale Red Oak project layout.

  1. Hi Dave.
Great looking Grass. Just a thought on moving the pin. Why not use several pin and just move the connection as you go. Another item, I noticed you always vacuum with out saving. You this time did add clean your vacuum first. I found that putting a piece of old tee shirt material over the end and pushing it in about 2 inches, using rubber bands to hold it I can save the loose material. Mixing it with several different materials and using it in vacant lots (areas) gives an interesting look.
Keep up the good work, we enjoy

  2. Not my original idea, but, put a sock in it! Tape an athletic sock to the end of the vacuum hose, and the ground foam will collect in it. A clean sock is preferred. Simply empty out the sock when done. . .no waste, neat and clean.

  3. Great information. I am intending to apply static grass on my N scale layout and this is the best information I have seen on how to do it. Thanks
PS Is there a story on the blue painters tape on the end of the vacuum hose? I'll bet there is some kind of homeowners tip involved with that.

  4. That was very informative. I've never applied static grass before, but I now have a clear road map and greater understanding of how to do it. Thanks!

  5. David,
Something tells me that you get a lot of squawk about vacuuming up ground foam lol. Your body language says it all!
