Thanks, David and everyone! I appreciate the comments!
J Gordon: Actually, I’ve got a river in mind for further down the layout. It’s just a thought right now, but I hope it works out!
Samuel: that’s no Campbell kit, it’s a scratchbuilt (board by board) model that I built from plans in Model Railroader long before Campbell used those same plans to create their 2-part kit.
Thomas: stay tuned! You’ll see that’s just about what I did!
Have a great, non-snowy (if that’s possible) weekend, everyone!
Another way to mark out roadways is to use colored string or twine. Small bits of drafting or painters tape can be used to hold the string if necessary. This makes it easy to lay out or change your roadways without it looking confusing. Once you are satisfied with the design, you can still use a pounce wheel to mark the pattern.
Looks great Gerry, I like flow of the small road and the gravel road coming into the paved road. It gives the elusion the the road is there the way it is, beacuse the scenery dictates the road. Looking forward to part 3
Good series, Gerry!
Just a reminder to all, Gerry’s Spaces to Places series is one of the main feature stories in Model Railroading The Ultimate Guide 2019. Be sure to check out the entire project in the special issue magazine, available at the end of March!
David
I’m enjoying this video series Gerry. Like you, I go through a thinking, planning and doing process like you do. I find a little extra time spent doing so leads to a better result. Also, the simplest solution is the best solution from my humble experience. Peace on man!
Sorry for being a stickler but you need to check your text notations at the bottom of the video for typos.
Maybe the thing to do is have a T intersection after the bridge. Add some nice details like a sop sign and some arrows. Would also make the transition from the wide part of the road coming out of the bridge easier to manage. The road to the right can still transition to a gravel road.
Great job Gerry and excellent demo of sketching roads. Glad I’m not the only one who makes changes when they don’t go right the first time. Looking forward to the next one.
I appreciate what Gerry is doing. After 13 years, or so, I finally hit on the idea of how to change one of my spaces into a place
Excellent video Gerry! Also, I think I saw a kit on your layout (Campbell kit- Saez Sash and Door) that I am building right now. I liked your take on the colors you used to stain the wood!
Wow, you’ve discovered what a lot of modelers (myself included) have forgotten. The “scenery” comes first.
“Dynamic planning”, Gerry?
Great approach to scenery planning and execution, Gerry! Thank you!
Gary This is so far my favorite series you have done, Since this scene is the first one a person will see of your layout did you ever consider making the road that goes under the track a river instead? I love water on my layout and think its “dramatic. Love the farm food idea. This is not AT ALL a criticism but a observation.
