David hits the books to inspire projects in this episode of the Log Blog. Historic photos prompt him to complete a skid shack, assemble realistic lumber loads, and consider plans for expanding the Olympia Logging Co. On30 layout even further.

  1. I am thrilled to of seen this video. It has given me some ideas as to add to my track plan. I am currently rebuilding my rail road for the fourth time. Each time I have started building my lay out I have moved and as a result started a new layout in a different scale. I am intrigued with On30 scale as depicted in the Olympia and the Olympia 2 videos. If you ever de side to make a DVD of the 2 Olympia’s I would most interested in them. Keep up the good work David and thank you for your hard work in bringing useful information. AKS

  2. Awesome job David! You definitely have some skills my friend. Looking forward to the construction of Sand Creek on Olympia 3.

  3. Love your video blogs. I see one comment about the pronunciation of “Skagit” but let me add to that. The “g” sounds like a “j”, and the “a” sounds like the “a” in “cat”; accent on the first syllable. …Ska’ jit Thanks, again!

  4. Looking at the credits of recent MRV episodes I see Jenny has had a life changing (or at least name changing) event. Send her our congratulations.

  5. David,
When you started to Log Blog I wasn’t sure I would follow it very much. As time has passed, it has become my favorite series on MRVP!
Now I’m really excited about Sand Creek and Olympia 3!!

  6. David, “Olympia 3” is the best news I’ve heard all week! I’m already looking forward to it. Ever since you and Ken moved the original Olympia into your basement, this project has become my favorite on MRVP by far. As I stated (as did several others) a while back, I would be very interested in purchasing a DVD of all the Olympia videos to date. Perhaps, after Olympia 3 wraps up it could be a 2 DVD set. Anyway, as always, great work on your and MRVP’s part and am looking forward to lots more to come.

  7. You’re having way too much fun with this. LOL I’m a confirmed N scale modeler, but I’ve also been tempted at times by On30. When living in Denver I developed a strong interest in Colorado narrow gauge but Nn3 is too small for me. On30 is the least costly way to do narrow gauge. However, I think O scale would require more detailing than I have patience.

  8. Very interesting! “Olympia 3” sounds like a good project for multiple episodes. Funny how the original shadow box railroad with limited operating potential is growing into a “proper” model railroad with an interesting operating scheme as well as beautiful scenery.

  9. The vertical strips on the structure look OK to me. Those buildings look like not much luxury was put in them and outward appearance might not be real important. It looks like what it is. An enlarged shack made into a warehouse.

  10. Another great episode David, you have given me some great ideas to add to my Beaver Creek On30 layout. I really like the town of Sand Creek. Looking forward to that extension and the farmhouse Rene is going to build.

  11. Great video, David! Great book, too! I’m also glad to see you’re planning the next diorama. I like the idea of making connecting individual, stand alone, dioramas which create distant ‘scenes’ on a larger operation. The never ending layout. I’m doing the same thing. The same old RR friend, Pat Tool, who gave me this book, just sent me a fantastic website for all kinds of this stuff,
    https://sierrawestscalemodels.com/chb-models.html.
(You know, a mirror on the end could work real nice; just adjust the track and buildings a tad, and presto, instant enlargement!).
    All the best!

  12. I am pleased to see you are planning to continue modelling in On30. I wonder if the town extension would look better on the other end of the existing layout. It could replace the sector plate which appears to be a slight bottleneck.

  13. On lumber loads – if O scalers are looking for rough-cut timbers, check out long fireplace matches. Depending on the brand, they scale out either 4×4 or 6×6 in O scale, and 36-38 ft long.

  14. Love what you are doing with this project layout! I really like that you are doing everything on each module BEFORE moving on to the next module. Also really appreciate that you show and tell what you use for the different structures, loads and such. Keep up the great work, it really is inspiring.

  15. You forgot the most important building in the logging camp: The cook house and dinning hall. The building you are proposing as a supply shack would work nicely in that regard. Besides, if ya don’t feed them loggers, they is liable to walk off the job.
