The resin pour along the Thompson River section of our Canadian Canyons N scale (1:160) layout has cured. That means David can now show you how to apply the appropriate finishing touches, including water ripples.

  1. Something I found on how to fight resin creep? I put Petroleum Jelly on the styrene damn. And for some reason the resin curves down rather than up. I learn that trick from an old MR years back. For a dock scene. But note you only need the Petroleum Jelly around were you plan the top level will be. Something to try.

  2. Where’s the part about using plexiglass for water? Re-looked at the water episodes. I’m using a 2’x4’ suspended ceiling diffuser with a “cracked ice” pattern to show waves but need to paint the back.

  3. James, the answer is no. the water wasn’t supposed to be above the fascia at the far end of the river. If you look at that piece of fascia, you’ll see that I’d let the saw wander of the mark. Before the water was in, it wasn’t noticeable, but now… it’s not that great.

Although I could cut a new one, at this point, I’m already working on a different layout (coming soon), so Canyons will probably stay the way it is for now – also, I’m completely out of fascia paint, and I’ll need to get more to fix it. If I do, I’ll let you know!

Thanks for writing, and Happy New Year!

    D.

  4. Excellent work David and MR gang for making this a true team effort. I would have never thought of using rubbing alcohol to smooth out the ripples, so thank you for this great tip. This will be without a doubt the most detailed project layout effort and I’m curious to see what will be next. 2019 is looking to be a great year in the hobby!

  5. Thank you David and staff for demonstrating several methods for adding water to a layout. The canyons layout has been a great platform for showing different scenery methods and structure building methods whilst creating a realistic representation of Drews adventures in Canada. Thanks.
