Mark, if you want a free software that is easy to use, look up SCARM. I have used it to plan many layout, both for me and my friends. If you have money to spend, you could search around to see what other software are available. Happy planning!

As someone who wants to start building a model railroading, I am overwhelmed. I have seen a lot of model railroad design software on the market. Is that a good place to start? Have they been reviewed before in MR magazine?
