In this episode editor Neil Besougloff continues scenery work on the Model Railroader staff’s Rice Harbor project. You’ll learn about the ground cover used for the South Carolina setting as well as Neil’s tips for planting trees on a model railroad. Meanwhile senior editor Dana Kawala works on a retail oil depot. Because of the layout’s modular configuration, this trackside industry required a “movable” loading point to make sense in either track configuration.

  1. Hello John,
Yes you are indeed correct. As a retail oil dealer, it would be unloading tank cars. I misspoke in the video.
    Thanks for watching,

  2. The oil facility Dana was working on was not for loading tank cars, but for unloading oil. A facility for loading oil would have had larger tanks. Great looking layout, nice details, scenery, can't wait for the com pleted layout.

  3. This is one of the most delightful, and unique, of all the MR project layouts. I really like the combination of this waterfront scene, the scale of the large factory and good switching opportunities. And it works well in either configuration, both in appearance and operation.

  4. How about using some lights, a tripod and throw in a few tight shots to see what Dana was talking about? Looked like they were on the high seas with the camera constantly rocking.

  5. Neil, you mentioned uncoupling along a siding in front of a factory beside some trees.. have you planned to reach past the trees to uncouple By Hand, or will you provide an uncoupling magnet to assist in the operation here? Thanks! you all have highlighted some very intriguing details on this layout!

  6. I like the video clips, they are very informative. Question: why are you using ground foam instead of static grass for the "grassy" areas?

  7. I always learn something from the video clips, maybe minor, but always helpful, such as the pins underneath small scenic details to make them movable.

  8. This may have been asked before, but what does Kalmbach do with the Project Layouts once they are done? Do you store them, donate them, disassemble them, or recycle them? Just wondering. Thanks.

  9. Hi Hal do you think in the Future there might be a Metra Layout? I really enjoy the urban passenger layouts.
    Thanks
