Era: modern
Comments: A contemporary manufactured home is the latest kit available from Summit Customcuts. The model would look great in a residential or rural area on a modern-era layout. The laser-milled styrene kit includes roofing material and clear window glazing. The finished home measures 11⁄2″ x 31⁄4″ x 6″.
The model uses tab-and-slot construction for the walls; the windows and doors fit in factory-milled openings. The windows and doors, and their respective openings, require light sanding and filing to ensure all the components fit properly.
There were two modifications I made to the house that aren’t covered in the instructions. First, I added
.250″ x .250″ styrene strip behind the .020″ x .250″ styrene used for the skirting. Without the bracing, the thin styrene skirt may bow over time.
I also used a razor saw to cut the grooves for the siding where the tab fits into the slot. I used the existing groves as a guide to keep the razor saw straight and made several light passes through the tab.
The kit includes Micro-Mark’s dark brown shingle paper for the roof. This product has a peel-and-stick backing and is textured to simulate asphalt roofing material. Because this roofing has a shiny finish, Summit recommends spraying it with Testor’s Dullcote after it’s applied.
The roof can be enhanced with a chimney, vents, and pipes (not included). The Summit USA manufactured home would look good as a standalone structure or as part of a manufactured home community.
