No injuries were reported in the derailment of a CSX coal train on Saturday, Oct. 25, in New Kent County, Va. New Kent County Sheriff’s Office

PROVIDENCE FORGE, Va. — No injuries were reported as two locomotives and 53 cars of a CSX coal train derailed today (Saturday, Oct. 25) in New Kent County, Va., near the unincorporated community of Providence Forge.

The New Kent County Sheriff’s Office first reported the incident on social media about 3:10 p.m., reporting that coal had been spilled into the wetlands area at the site, and said 15 cars had derailed. CSX later significantly revised the figure of the number of cars involved, according to WAVY-TV, and also said some diesel fuel had spilled from the locomotives. The railroad was working with federal and state environmental agencies to address the spill.

The derailment led to the cancellation of two Amtrak Northeast Regional trains, Nos. 99 and 124, between Richmond and Newport News, Va. Amtrak said on its NEC Alerts social media feed that it was seeking to arrange a bus substitution.

The derailment site is about 22 miles east of Richmond, Va., on CSX’s Peninsula Subdivision.
