The Georgetown Loop Railroad shows how engineering overcame mountains when it came to reaching precious minerals in the Colorado Rockies. As the name states, the railroad’s highlight is a loop where the tracks cross over themselves on a massive bridge to gain elevation. The reconstructed Devil’s Gate Viaduct stands no less spectacular than when it was built in the late 1800s.

Board at Devil’s Gate station in Georgetown for five daily trips. Departures on the Georgetown Loop Railroad are also offered from Silver Plume station on Saturdays and Sundays. Both stations offer the same trip. Watch the slopes for wildlife. Both diesel and steam locomotives operate. During the spring, summer and fall, open-air cars are offered. During the winter months, parlor- and presidential-class service is available.
When to go
The operating season begins in May and continues to November. During much of the season, five trains run on a daily basis. Holiday trains operate in November and December. Beginning in October, coaches are heated coaches and pulled by a diesel locomotive.
Good to know
Primary steam power is two U.S.-built, Central American Railways 2-8-0s. A restored Rio Grande caboose can be rented as a private car for up to 12 on any Silver Plume departure. From May until September, the Loop also offers a guided walking tour of the Lebanon mine preserved as it was in the 1870s. There are events throughout the year. Please visit the website for details.
Worth doing
Georgetown is quaint and quiet with few modern influences — the exception being Interstate 70. Its National Historic Landmark District features unique shops, restaurants and small museums in restored Victorian buildings. A great breakfast and lunch spot is the Happy Cooker in downtown Georgetown.
Don’t miss
Travel on I-70 between Georgetown and Silver Plume and watch the train tackle the mountain on both the loop but also a series of zig-zags. A rest area on I-70 eastbound provides an outstanding view. The rest area is accessible by the pedestrian path from either station.
Getting there
The railroad is about 50 miles west of Denver off I-70. Exit 228 takes you to Georgetown and a few miles away Exit 226 takes you to Silver Plume.
