Q: I rewound the motor for my Lionel no. 182 crane, and the motor works fine, but I am unable to make it reverse. I called Lionel but they didn’t have a diagram for the no. 182. Instead, the service representative sent a diagram for a no. 165 crane. The big difference in the cranes is that the no. 165 has a double-wound field coil and the no. 182 has a single-wound field coil. I do hope someone can come up with a diagram so I can get my crane running right again. – H.L.
A: I’m sorry to give you the bad news, but the Lionel no. 182 gantry crane is supposed to have a double-wound field coil; that’s why you can’t get yours to reverse. The no. 165 wiring diagram is the same as for the no. 182, which is also why they can use the same controller.
There is a bright side to this story, however. Since you went to all the trouble to rewind the motor field the first time, now you have the experience to do it again – except you have to add the additional field wiring.
