FOUNTAINTOWN, Ind. — Fourteen cars of a CSX train derailed this morning in an unincorporated area near Greenfield, Ind., blocking a state highway and knocking down some local power lines.
CSX says in a statement that the derailment occurred about 8:11 a.m., and involved six empty cars and eight loaded cars. No hazardous materials were involved, although some plastic pellets and a non-hazardous material (fatty acid) was spilled. CSX is working with first responders and Duke Energy to restore electrical service.
The derailment occurred about 20 miles east-southeast of Indianapolis. WXIN-TV initially reported the Indianapolis Fire Department Hazmat team had been dispatched, but Greenfield police subsequently reported on Twitter that the accident posed no health threat. CSX says the cause of the derailment is under investigation.
